Kate’s story about the painting:

“This is large oil and was part of the sugar cane series. It depicts the procedure of loading the cane into the carts and transporting the fresh cane to the factory in town. It was a complicated composition especially as I wanted to show the volcano in the background. As a painter you are always checking on where you want the 'eye' to travel and I remember being rather pleased when I included the distant smoke plume in the centre panel. It helped the focus an brought the eye back to the centre panel.”
